NOTE - This article was originally published at Nintendorks.com on November 16th 1999 in celebration of Shigeru Miyamoto's 47th birthday, and the author's 18th. The article went on to receive IGN's Snowglobe Award for "Best Featured Article" by an IGN affiliate.

Introduction…

If I was inclined to venture into the staggering sales figures and huge profits brought to Nintendo by his multiple game franchises and breakthrough innovations… I could credit Shigeru Miyamoto as a business genius, a man devoted to building a financial empire on the base of his hugely popular creations. He has achieved all that any master businessman would ever hope to achieve. But if I portrayed Shigeru Miyamoto in this light, I would be a poor excuse for a videogame journalist.

The man is, from the exterior shell to the very core, an artist. An artist that creates what’s in his heart. He makes the games he would want to play, an admirable quality in this age of demographics and marketing gimmicks. And although his creations account for billions upon billions in sales, Miyamoto is happy living a modest lifestyle with his wife, his two sons, and his daughter. “Modest?” …Yes. I hear he even rides a bicycle to work, something not due to financial restraints I’m sure. You have to admire a millionaire that rides his bike to work. It seems that Shigeru Miyamoto looks beyond the dollar signs. Not one to fuss about such things, Miyamoto has forfeited potential millions in royalties from his creations. He’s perfectly content with things remaining the way they are, and wouldn’t so much as consider working for a company besides Nintendo.

I’m honored to say that I’ve never met a man more humble than Shigeru Miyamoto. Never is he overly concerned with his appearance, as is evident by his *ahem* natural hairstyle. He typically wears jeans, a sports jacket, and comfortable shoes to work. He’s even been known to sport a stylish Mickey Mouse shirt-tie. His desk is covered with various colorful toys, a desk in which a banjo is always kept nearby. He truly lives in a world all his own, happily and by his own rules. One could argue that Miyamoto lives his life similar to the way he creates his games. It’s a beautiful thing.
